The Invisible Scene: Interspersing Dialogue with Action

“Upstairs!” she called when the dog barked, alerting her to a guest in the house.

At the top of the stairs, looking into her bedroom, I saw her left foot, clad in a man’s white tube sock, twisting uncontrollably at the behest of its big toe. The rest of my mother lay sprawled between the bedroom and the bathroom, almost upside down, as her entire left leg jumped and danced to its own beat, while her right hand attempted to paint the bathroom door frame. With paint all over her shirt and more green in her hair than gray, she smiled up at me, “Isn’t this a fabulous color?”
